NIWA & MetService tropical cyclone outlook

MetService, in collaboration with NIWA, have provided a Southwest Pacific tropical cyclone outlook. The Tropical Cyclone (TC) season officially started in November and this outlook covers the period from November 2022 to April 2023. This season six to ten named TC’s are expected, which is near the normal of eight to nine for the Southwest Pacific region. There is an expectation of three severe category 3 or higher TC’s occurring. Previous patterns indicate that TC’s tend to increase between February to April but for this season the busy period is expected to be from November to January. Aotearoa has a normal to elevated risk this season. On average at least one ex- Tropical Cyclone passes near Aotearoa per year.
